Description
Finca Vigia, located a few miles outside Havana in the small village of, San Francisco de Paula. Hemingway lived here for more than 20 years, and it was the location where he wrote “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “The Old Man and the Sea”. The home is maintained exactly the way it was when Hemingway left here in 1960. In his bedroom, you can see his typewriter just where he left it. He was in the practice of writing long hours while standing up. The house was built in 1936 and Hemingway purchased it in 1940. The home is filled with books, hunting trophies, his bar, and bull fighting posters. Until about 4 years ago, the house had not been in the best of repair because of the difficulties imposed by the American Embargo. However, there was a collaboration that began in about 2008, started by the grandaughter of Hemingway’s publisher, in which the Cuban people and Americans have worked together to preserve the home.
