Description
Covered bridges with roofs and wooden sides are called "kissing bridges" because people inside the bridge cannot be seen from outside. Such bridges can be traced back to the early 19th century. Contrary to folk wisdom, they were not designed to produce rural "lovers' lanes," but were covered to protect the structures from deterioration.
Although these bridges may not have been originally "designed" as lover's lanes, I am guessing that they were often utilized as such back in the day when such things were shocking and there was much scrutiny of unmarried young people. This particular bridge was discovered on a little-traveled back country road near Route 66 in Missouri.
