Description
I, the poet William Yeats,
With old mill boards and sea-green slates,
And smithy work from the Gort forge,
Restored this tower for my wife George;
And may these characters remain
When all is ruin once again.
These words of William Butler Yeats are chiseled into the stone of the Norman Tower where he lived for 12 years with his wife, George, and their two children. It is located near the village of Gort, County Galway, Ireland.
It was while at this location that he was inspired to write; To Leave Here is to Leave Beauty Behind, The Tower Poems, The Winding Stair.
A possible haunting adds to the mystery and romance of the tower. Yeats, a strong believer in the afterlife, was convinced that the tower was inhabited by the spirit of a young man, an opinion which was shared by a later museum caretaker. In 1989 tourists, upon developing photographs taken there, found the ghostly figure of a young boy on their film.

Dagmar, Thanks for your nice compliment. I am glad that you enjoyed this image. It was an interesting experience for me to sort of walk in the footsteps of Yeats when I was in Ireland. Thanks for your vf

Sydne, Thanks so much for selecting this as your favorite for discussion today. You should keep dreaming and planning your trip to Ireland, for it is indeed a magical land. I would think that children would be especially enchanted, the people are so welcoming and it seems to be a magical place. I've never seen so many rainbows. Thanks for supporting my art with such generosity!
