Description
The legendary Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana has long been regarded as one of America's most haunted houses, however, a large part of the tale has been fabricated and embellished over the years. While there are some unusual happenings that occur on the property, they seem to have little relationship with the ghost stories that have been passed along as fact. There were multiple deaths that occurred on the property from Yellow Fever and typhoid as well as one murder.
The Myrtles was originally built for David Bradford in 1794, who was involved in the Whiskey Rebellion, which was a disagreement with the government about taxes levied on the sale of whiskey along the frontier. Bradford was eventually pardoned for his role in the rebellion by President, John Adams.
The daughter of Mr. Bradford, Sarah Mathilda, was romantically courted by one of her father's law students under the many crape myrtles, which give the plantation its name, and they were married in 1817. She tragically died from yellow fever in 1823 leaving three young children. Her husband never married again.
This image has been processed in sepia tones, with a misty quality to give a dreamlike appearance.
