Description
This unknown tomb is located in historic Lafayette Cemetery #1 in the Garden District of New Orleans. This cemetery was first established in 1843, and 613 of the yellow fever victims of the mid-1800s are interred here. There are several notable "residents" including Civil War Veterans, a member of the French Foreign Legion and eight ladies identified as "Consorts".
It's not surprising that ghost stories and tales of the undead, Zombies and being burried alive are associated with Lafayette #1. Many of these tales are said to be Cemetery urban legends, while others swear this is the most haunted Cemetery for parnomal encounters and a feeling of being truly haunted. It is included in most Ghost Tours of New Orleans.
It was the setting, in the midst of all this decaying grandeur, that captured the imagination of local author Anne Rice, who has used the place in many of her books - she even staged a mock funeral here, to launch publication of Memnoch the Devil ; the corpse was herself, wearing an antique wedding dress, in an open coffin carried by pall bearers.
