Description
Shown is a minimalist interpretation of a park bench in Cismigiu Gardens located in Bucharest, Romania. The Cişmigiu Gardens are a public park near the center of Bucharest, Romania, spanning areas on all sides of an artificial lake. The gardens' creation was an important moment in the history of Bucharest. They form the oldest and, at 17 hectares, the largest park in city's central area.
As I was strolling through the park, which seems to have seen some decline over the years, the strains of the Beatles' song, "Yesterday" came through my mind. The park is surrounded by lovely Beaux-Arts apartment buildings, which too, have seen considerable neglect in the ensuing years. I reminisced about the fashionable life-style which once surrounded this magnificent greenspace in the center of Bucharest, which was once known as "The Paris of the East". I visualized this park as one similar to Luxembourg Gardens.
Consider the "she" mentioned in the Beatles' song being a personification of the park itself, I offer here, for your consideration, the lyrics for "Yesterday" -
Songwriters: COCKER, JARVIS BRANSON / MACKEY, STEPHEN PATRICK / BANKS, NICK / DOYLE, CANDIDA / WEBBER, MARK ANDREW
Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly,
I'm not half the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
Why she
Had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Why she
Had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm.
The receding series of benches in this composition seemed to fit those lyrics as they fade into the distance. This image has been processed to give the appearance of a wood block or linoleum block print with only pure black and white, as if printed with black ink.
