Description
While in Istanbul, I began to have a desire to learn more about the use of the veil by Muslim women. As an artist and seamstress, I had an admiration and appreciation of the flow and drape of the garments, they are beautiful and react to the woman's movement in such a graceful manner. I enjoyed watching them as they went about their routines, "there" but sort of "not there" as well.
Even those women who do not drape in the traditional black robes, wear long skirts, long sleeves, underneath a long coat and headscarf, often with stockings and high-top shoes. I noticed one lady, probably in her 60s, riding an un-airconditioned bus dressed in this way desperately trying to fan herself with a bit of tissue, while her husband sitting next to her was dressed in Western men's clothing of a short-sleeve golf shirt and light weight cotton pants. For myself, I found the mid-90 degree temps uncomfortable in loose lightweight linen shirts, pants and sandals. How can they not resent this, I wondered?
When I engaged an educated and knowledgeable young Muslim man as a tour guide, I asked him how his wife felt about wearing the traditional clothing. He said that she willingly did this as sort of a penance to gain heaven. Explaining that because the man traditionally went into battle to protect his family, he was more free to choose. Also explaining that it was taught that you reserved a different quality of food for the horse that carried you into battle, than the mule in your stable . . . . . Amazing!
After reading more, I can appreciate that women might elect to dress in this way as a choice to be considered more for themselves, and what they might contribute to society, rather than how they look or what they might be wearing. Whereas I could not do this, I can admire them for the choice they make as well as the wonderful dance that they perform as they swish along the streets.

Cheri, what an interesting work - we only can respect this habit even though it is hard to understand for us. VF - Dagmar

Dagmar, It was a learning experience for me, and I would enjoy going back sometime. Yes, you have to admire and respect them for the choice that they make for the sake of their religious beliefs. Thanks for the V/F!
