Description
"I don't want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic. I try to give that to people. I do misrepresent things. I don't tell truths. I tell what ought to be truth." ~ Blanche DuBois from Tennessee Williams' "Streetcar Named Desire"
Shown is a totally empty New Orleans streetcar, which has been processed in a way reminiscent of a wood block or linoleum block print, utilizing only a completely black and white color palette eliminating the gray mid-tones.
The streetcars utilized today on the St. Charles line were manufactured by the Perley A. Thomas Car Works Company and have been in continuous use since they were introduced to the line in 1923, except for the interruption caused by Hurricane Katrina. The Saint Charles Avenue Line starts uptown, at South Carrollton Avenue and South Claiborne Avenue. It runs on South Carrollton Avenue through the Carrollton neighborhood towards the Mississippi River, then near the river levee turns on to Saint Charles Avenue. It proceeds past entrances to Audubon Park, Tulane University and Loyola University New Orleans, continues through Uptown New Orleans including the Garden District, and ends at Canal Street in the New Orleans Central Business District at the edge of the French Quarter, a distance of about seven and a half miles. It is heavily utilized as a means of public transportation by students, residents commuting to the Central Business District, and untold numbers of tourists who want the best view of life along the Avenue as it has been experienced for over a century.
This image will be most effectively printed on a matte surface paper such as watercolor or Somerset Velvet to replicate the process of ink printing.

Cheri, I love the photo, and the "words of wisdom" you put to go with it!! Isn't that the truth.. I like the OUGHT to be the TRUTH...that's a good line! Favorited.. love your work!
Cheri Randolph replied:
Kym, thanks so much for your positive and generous feedback on this one! This is the piece that I finally decided to submit for the Photo 101 project, which was to be only black and white with no gray. Glad that you enjoyed the quote from Tennessee Williams, too.
