Artist's Description
"His way had therefore come full circle, or rather had taken the form of an ellipse or a spiral, following as ever no straight unbroken line, for the rectilinear belongs only to Geometry and not to Nature and Life." Hermann Hesse - from "The Glass Bead Game"
As I was photographing this vintage carousel in New Orleans Audubon Park Zoo one cold January morning, I began to realize how symbolic this usually active and people-filled area could be while quietly contemplated. On this weekday morning, I was the only person in attendance and could wander freely among the gaily painted and whimsical animals. The carousel came to symbolize Life's circle to me, with its ups and downs, but eventually returning to the point of beginning. For we are creatures of habit and make choices based on our life experience, with many of the events repeating, and often foreshadowed by repeating signals. Nature, too, follows this cyclical pattern. I selected a black and white color palette to emph...

Cheri, you have created a beautiful image and an apt metaphor for life itself. I love the writings of Hermann Hesse, as you know and found this passage perfect. Please tell me which work it's from. There is a scene in the movie Parenthood in which an elderly woman uses carousels and roller coasters as her metaphor. It came to mind as I read your rumination. Well done Miss Cheri. voted, favorite.
Cheri Randolph replied:
William, I'm glad that this one was meaningful to you. Thanks for reminding me that I had not fully attributed the quote, which is from "The Glass Bead Game". It seemed to express appropriately the feeling that I experienced at the scene. I appreciate your support!
