Just what is Minimalism in photography?

The word minimalism describes a concept that refers to a work of art that is stripped down to its most fundamental features. The minimalist movement began in the 20th century and can be found in all forms of art. The idea is to have a work of art with a minimum number of colors, shapes, textures and lines. The concept is not very easy to describe, as it involves some abstract thinking and it can be interpreted in many ways.

In photography minimalism is somehow more open to creativity. But, it is also based on the general rules of minimalism in the other forms of arts. Generally speaking, minimalistic photography can be described as the art of “less is more”. Although in this type of photography, the composition is basic, with the right framing the subject in the photograph can be emphasized very nicely. Using fewer details in the pic...

Cheri Randolph

Cheri Randolph was awarded a degree in Fine Arts from the University of New Orleans with a concentration in the study of Art History. She credits printmaker, Calvin Harlan , a UNO professor, as being quite influential in her composition techniques as well as painter, Ida Kohlmeyer with a better understanding of color. Pictorialism would best describe her current work, stylistically. Cheri has expressed her artistic talents in a variety of ways including; wheel-thrown pottery, quilting, vintage clothing restoration, interior decorative painting and photography.
