Description
Shown is a Texas Hill Country ranch in Spring, with a profusion of wildflowers that are planted along the backroads bringing a riot of color to the landscape.
We owe much of the credit for the beautification of Texas and many U.S. Highways to Lady Bird Johnson, wife of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, who made a life-long goal of preserving native flora. In her own words,
"Some may wonder why I chose wildflowers when there are hunger and unemployment and the big bomb in the world. Well, I, for one, think we will survive, and I hope that along the way we can keep alive our experience with the flowering earth. For the bounty of nature is also one of the deep needs of man."
Bluebonnets (Lupinus texensis) are most prominent in this photo, and are the most popular Texas wildflowers in central Texas. People come from hundreds of miles to view the Bluebonnets. The Bluebonnets start blooming in the middle of March and usually peak about the second week of April.
Also visible in this composition are red Texas Paintbrush (Castilleja indivisa), which start blooming the same time as the Bluebonnets and bloom in the same areas with the Bluebonnets, side by side, from the middle of March through April.
