Description
The legendary Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana has long been regarded as one of "America's most haunted Houses", however, a large part of the tale has been fabricated and embellished over the years. While there are some unusual happenings that occur on the property, they seem to have little relationship with the ghost stories that have been passed along as fact. There were multiple deaths that occurred on the property from Yellow Fever and typhoid as well as one murder.
Is the Myrtles really haunted? In all likelihood, the infamous Chloe, the slave mistress of the owner, who supposedly poisoned several people probably did not exist. The story that seems to have more substance than any of the others is the elderly woman in the green turban, who has appeared to several residents and guests beginning with the Williams family in the 1950s.
Since several children died early of diseases in the house, the tale of the young girl with long curly hair, wearing an ankle-length dress, who has been seen floating outside the window of the game room, cupping her hands trying to peer inside through the glass seems to have some validity.
The grand piano on the first floor also plays by itself, usually repeating the same chord over and over again.
On a personal note, I have toured the home twice and the tour guide shared these stories:
In the 1980s, when I toured, they described the present owners as a family with several young children living in the house. The parents became so concerned that their children had so many "ghostly" playmates that they moved from the house so that the children would not have a distorted sense of reality. Then, when I toured in 2010, the tour guide pointed out a mirror in the entry hall that looked very old and discolored. She said that the mirror itself was new, but everytime they replaced it the same dark shadows begin to appear after a short time.
