Description
Shown in the photograph are two vintage composition dolls, which date from the early 1940s. The doll on the left is marked Effanbee, and was manufactured pre-WWII, as indicated by the use of mohair for the wig. The body is a combination of composition for the head and hands utilizing a cloth body. The one on the right is a combination of composition and plastic, and has no manufacturer's identification.
Founded around 1912 in New York City, Effanbee stands for Fleischaker & Baum, F & B, who were the company founders. They became well known for being the first to produce a realistically proportioned child doll named Patsy; they created companion dolls, a large wardrobe and her own fan club reportedly with 275,000 members. F & B also created the first hard rubber, drink and wet doll named Dy-Dee Baby.
The Effanbee Company produced composition, hard rubber, cloth, hard plastic and vinyl dolls. Tonner purchased and is producing Effanbee modern dolls today. Note: Many of the Effanbee dolls have their name right in the marking.

Congrats on your win, Cheri. Old dolls with cracks and flaws are the most beautiful. I like your placement of them in the image. v :)
Cheri Randolph replied:
Patricia, Thanks very much for noticing. I agree those 'character' marks are one of the most endearing things about old dolls. I appreciate your compliment & vote!
Ann Horn
Congratulations on winning first place in the Doll Contest, Cheri. These are such lovely old dolls and so beautifully photographed.... the one on the right looks a little like Beverly, my favorite doll of childhood.

Ann, thanks so much for noticing and letting me know! I've been so busy lately that I hadn't checked. Dolls are such wonderful things for reminding us of favorite childhood pastimes. I'm glad that you enjoyed viewing this photo.

Poor Dollies. v/f.

John, thanks for your generous compliment and your always more than generous promotional support! Had to smile at your analysis of my photographic finesse in getting the shot without any glare. The effect was probably achieved more from the lack of dusting than my photographic ability :-)

Cheri, Great photo of these two amazing dolls from yesteryear. Fantastic detail in their faces and clothing and great backdrop behind the doll to the right. Excellent write up in the description box about the history of these two vintage dolls. Gotta love the eyes and the way you have captured the colors on these dolls is excellent, no glare coming off of their heads. Excellent photo, voted, favorite, google, tweet and FB promoted as seen in the group, USA Artist News promo thread

Cheri Randolph replied:
Thanks, Joan. They weren't mine as a child, but part of a small collection that I acquired as an adult, but I enjoy them still.

What a sweet capture of antique dolls. They remind me of my Aunt's collection. vf

Ann Horn
How charming, Cheri. Love those old dolls. The one on the left reminds me of my much loved Beverly. (Long time ago!)
Cheri Randolph replied:
Hi Ann, The one on the left is an early 1940s Effanbee. It is pre-WWII because it has a mohair wig, and I understand that they didn't use that during the war because the wool was needed for servicemen. Glad that the photo brought back some fond memories.
Randy Rosenberger

Cheri Randolph replied:
Thanks for your compliment, Randy. The painting of the farm house is one where I lived with my family when I was a child. The dolls are in my personal collection. Thanks for the F/V!
