Description
The strong admonitions found on the steps of this Houston, Texas warehouse door near a soup kitchen feeding the homeless, brought into clear focus for me just how limited are the options of some.

The repeated rectangular shapes, textures and colors make this a powerful image.

Madalena, I am honored by your feature of this image which might increase social consciousness about the plight of homeless and destitute people. Thank you!

Lianne, Yes, you are so very correct. Houston is not recognized for this more gritty side of their urban population. Our focus is largely on commerce and a show of success. However, this was very touching and memorable, that no one could even consider so much as sitting here, as they left the soup kitchen. And, in defense of the business, they probably had no other choice in the matter because of location.

That's the thing about Houston isn't it - the skyscrapers, the oil money, the "sameness" of the architecture in most of the suburbs - and then the dishabille of this older part of the city, the sense of abandonment. Beautiful tonal contrasts here too Cheri. Something rather unfriendly in the "do not sit" stamped all over the steps. A very meaningful capture - symbolic of so much we just don't talk much about in this country - a lack of compassion and kindness in some. I'm really very moved by this piece. F/V TW FB

Bob, thanks for your thoughtful critique and confirmation of this one. I rarely am successful at capturing this kind of image, but this situation was shouting for attention.

Lenore, I am quite complimented by your selection of this image, your comments and support. It absolutely was a stark reminder when I saw these repeated warnings. Thanks also to Joan Carroll and Pamela Patch, I think. Their comments were lost when I added information to the description and the original submission was wiped off the site. All were appreciated.
